There were so many old buildings, it was like walking through a time machine. Except for the modern cars. Those were new. But the buildings! They were great.
The entire district is small enough to walk easily, although I prefer taking a stroll. Maybe even a saunter.
The newest building was built in, I believe, the 1880s, with many being much older than that. Except the one with is a rebuild from the 1920s if the faded marker in front is to be believed.
To go into some of the historic houses, you'll need to buy tickets at the museum. But be careful as some if the houses are privately owned and you don't want to walk in on them. Also there are a couple of schools who own some land.
Overall it was a very nice experience. They I will do again.
Wonderful place….. absolutely strongly recommend! All the houses are spread alone a Main Street; the interpreters are all so engaging and passionate!! We spent about three hours and barely went through half of the houses. Will definitely need to come back.
Thank you, Historic Deerfield!!!
I took the walking tour, which I highly recommend if you have time. Afterwards, I went through the Sheldon House, which is self-guided. To go through tours that were in the other houses would have taken about another 4 hours was more than we had time. This is an all day visit if you take all the tours and walking tour. All for $18.
If you are in the area, recommend you take time to stop. We visited in the fall and the neighborhood’s decorations made both aesthetically pleasing and calming. I was also pleasantly surprised at how much the museum had.
We were only able to visit for a few hours, but had an amazing time. There were fun learning opportunities and demonstrations throughout the day, such as cooking on an open hearth, and carpentry using tools from the 17th -19th centuries. Many historic buildings and guided tours within the scenic mile long district. The wonderful Deerfield Inn features a restaurant that serves savory dishes fireside in fall and winter, all day. (Reservations are a good idea). A large museum, post office, and a charming gift shop. Tickets were only $18 for adults, sold at the visitor's center. We loved every minute & hope to return soon to these friendly people in this beautiful historic town.
They have a $18.00 (For adult) all access sticker to enter any house that is part of the tour. GET IT. Every accessible building holds a wealth of information, thee guides are some of thee best guides ever. Any questions you may have they have an answer for. Citing source, and in many cases legal documents and receipts. Just over all good walk through time.
Most buildings closed on Saturday, tour guide was a little snippy. meh!
Set aside a day to do this. Only regret not getting to spend more time here. You pay upfront for however many tours you want. There is a guide at each house. Some houses are self guided. Some houses closed for lunch. Lots of neat history. The houses are spread out in that part of town as well, not all in one tight area. Be aware of this if there are chances of rain.
